Acrylic on gessoboard - 18 x 24 in - 2016
Sunlight spilled around these cholla cacti and filtered through their spines one cloudless spring morning. As sometimes occurs here, the sky was a peculiar, incredible blue, and the light was eye dazzling in its brilliance. As it passed around the cactus spines it bent and seemed to create rainbows. I had to stop and look- and photograph.
I used acrylic paint on gesso board to capture the scene. I first painted a bright blue background, and then added silhouettes of the cacti in black. Finally, I created the refracted light using stringy tar gel mixed with various colors of paint.
