Cactus Dance

Acrylic on canvas - 24 x 30 in - 2016

In this piece, I tried a new approach to depicting my beloved prickly pear cacti, likely inspired by the fact that these didn’t grow near my home but in the (incredible!) Grand Canyon. By the way, if you haven’t been there yet, put it on the “bucket list”. Really!

After a rough sketch, I used clear acrylic gel to attach pieces of dried palette paint to my canvas and to give energy, texture, and focus to the work. I then painted the other forms and background around them. I used a more pastel palette than my usual, reflective of the range of oranges, peaches, and pinks in the Grand Canyon.
